Is It Possible to Steam Your Legs If You Have Varicose Veins: An Answer to an Important Question

24.10.2024 13:00

Varicose veins are quite a common problem among women and men of different ages. This disease is a deformation and enlargement of veins (mainly in the legs) and occurs as a result of weakness of the vessel walls and venous valves.

Since blood cannot fully rise upward to the heart, congestion occurs in the veins, which provokes their swelling. Varicose veins can limit life in certain ways, especially when it comes to running, prolonged sitting, and other aspects. In this article, we will talk about whether it is possible to steam your legs if you have varicose veins.

Is it allowed to steam your legs with venous disease?

We must immediately answer that no, it is not allowed to steam your legs if you have varicose vein disease. In itself, steaming the legs can have a positive effect on the body and help with a runny nose, cough, or hypothermia. However, this procedure is safe only if you have healthy veins.

The thing is that the human body is able to regulate its temperature through several protective mechanisms, one of which is the dilation of veins. Upon contact with heat, these vessels dilate, as blood actively flows to the surface of the skin, and blood circulation becomes more intense in this area.

If your veins are healthy, they are able to easily withstand such loads, after which they can easily return to their original state. However, diseased vessels are more vulnerable. As a result of increased blood circulation, pressure on the venous walls increases.

Since with varicose veins the venous vessels are already dilated, due to the additional load they will be damaged even more. Therefore, due to active steaming of the legs, the symptoms of varicose veins can only worsen. Even in isolated cases, a vein rupture and its active or minor bleeding may occur.

We note that after surgery to remove veins, steaming the legs is also not allowed immediately. You must wait until all areas are completely healed, as high temperatures can provoke repeated dilation of veins.

By the way, please note that unlike steaming the legs, warming the legs in warm water is not prohibited if you have varicose veins. Ordinary warm water does not pose a threat to dilated veins.

Is it possible to use a sauna if you have varicose veins?

In most cases, this is prohibited for varicose veins and swollen vessels. The logic here is obvious:

  • the bathhouse has high temperatures that provoke dilation of veins and acceleration of blood circulation;
  • after leaving the sauna, the vessels begin to narrow sharply, which negatively affects their condition.

However, if you need prevention rather than treatment of varicose veins, a sauna can be a good solution. Because in addition to this, it also improves heart function.

The best solution in any case will be a consultation with a phlebologist. By contacting our clinic, you can undergo an examination, find out what stage of varicose veins you have, and what is allowed for you and what is prohibited. Remember that varicose veins are a serious disease, so you should not neglect your health and seek help in a timely manner.
